While there is no limit to the number of streams you can create, it is recommended to start with one or two streams and expand over time as needed. This is because it is important to keep enough new content coming into each stream to keep users interested and coming back for more. If you find you have a lot of posts coming in related to a particular team or topic, you can always create a separate stream specifically for those posts later on.
Depending on whether your app uses locations or org units or not, there is a different process to add a new stream.
Adding a New Stream in apps without the locations feature:
- Login to Beekeeper on a desktop computer
- Click the “speedometer” icon on the right-hand side of the top navigation bar to go to the Dashboard:
- Click the “Streams” tab and then the 'Streams" subtab to the left
- In the top right corner, click the “+ Add stream” button
- Type in the name of your stream
- Choose the stream access, whether you want your stream to be public or private
- The private stream will be visible only to a restricted audience: a group, a location, selected users
-
If the admin user selects “Add Public Stream” the Stream will be immediately activated by default and it will be shown a notification that says the Stream has been activated
-
If the admin user selects “Add Private Stream” the Stream will be deactivated by default until the admin user adds Permissions
Adding a New Stream in apps with the locations/org units feature enabled:
- Login to Beekeeper on a desktop computer
- Click the “speedometer” icon on the right-hand side of the top navigation bar to go to the Dashboard:
- Click the “Streams” tab and then the 'Streams" subtab to the left
- In the top right corner, click the “+ Add stream” button
- Type in the name of your stream and choose the location of the stream
- Set up any additional permissions for groups and individuals
- Activate the stream
Setting up permissions and activating the new stream, so users can see it:
-
From the list of streams, click on the name of your new stream
- Best Practice: add a description to prompt users on how to use the stream. Always add a cover image so the app looks professional and aesthetically pleasing
-
At the top of the page, click the “Permissions” tab
- Under the “Group Permissions” section, add a group to give multiple users access at once
- Under the “Individual Permissions” section, add users’ names to give access to one person at a time
- At the top of the page, click the “General” tab
- In the top right corner, click the “Click to activate” button to make the stream visible to all users with permissions to that stream
Cover image format:
- Allowed file types: .jpeg / .png
- Max. size: 10MB
- The recommended size for the stream title image is 750x400 pixels, but given the variety of devices and web browsers on which Beekeeper is viewed, it is not possible to clearly define an ideal size. On some devices, some cropping will occur, so make sure the most important part of the image is in the "safe zone" - that is 750x204 px. The "safe zone" is what's displayed in the web app. So please make sure that the most important part of the image, subtitles or important people or products are placed in the 750x204px area of the image.
- All images will be resized and cropped to 750 x 400 pixels
- Mobile: Stream headers resize depending on how much content they contain. With streams with sufficiently long descriptions (~3-4 lines), the full image is shown. With small stream headers, part of the top and bottom will be cropped.
- Web: Stream covers have a static size of 650x200 pixels
- The cover image - in a reduced size and centrally cut - will be used as an icon for a respective stream. Keep in mind that the central area of 200x200 pixels of the image will be used for this miniature.
