Magic Variables will help you reference fields from the preceding steps in a dynamic way.
For example in the field “Send a chat message” depending on your use case, you can either send it to the form submitter / user who logged in / user added or removed from a group, or you can send the chat message to a specific user, by selecting the user from a dropdown.
To use Magic Variables:
- Click on the field you want to fill in, the Magic Variables panel will appear on the left side
- Click on the Magic Variable you want to select
- The Magic Variable will be automatically copied to the field on the right
Tip 1: Some Magic Variables have a green icon next to them and some have a gray one with a question mark. The green one is the best match for the given field, whereas the gray one may or may not be not be suitable for the field you are trying to fill in. Best matches are always at the top of the section.
Tip 2: In the Magic Variables panel, you will only see variables from the steps you already added to your workflow. The blocks are in the order of the actions in your workflows.
Tip 3: To see more variables from the user (i.e. First, Last Name), for example the form submitter, add the action “Retrieve user profile data”. To reference fields from the tenant, add the step “Retrieve company data”.
Tip 4: When working with a workflow that includes multiple similar actions, it can be challenging to identify the source of a specific variable. To help you pinpoint the origin of a variable, follow these steps:
- Hover your mouse over the variable in the Magic Variable panel or the dropdown menu.
- The editor will provide visual cues to assist you:
- The relevant block on the canvas will be outlined (#1).
- The Mini Map component and its corresponding block will also be highlighted (#2. Only visible from 10+ blocks).
